Binary Counter Circuit Diagram

Last Updated on March 16, 2024

Binary counter circuit diagram has many applications and widely used in digital electronics and counter circuits. It can be easily built by using simple ripple counter IC. We can design binary counter starting from 2 bit to maximum bits we want.

There are lot of binary counter integrated circuits available in market, here we have choose IC HD74HC4040, it is a 12 stage counter IC, this IC counts incremented on the falling edge of the input clock and all of its output is reset to a low level by applying a logical high on its reset input pin.

This IC can be take wide operating voltage from 2V to 6V and utilize low current consumption during operation.

Construction & Working

This circuit is constructed to give 8 bit binary counting. First stage of this circuit is clock generating circuit which is made by timer IC 555 and it is configured in Astable multivibrator and provides constant square wave at its output pin 3. We can vary the output pulse by changing R2 value, an LED connected at the IC 555 output through R3 Resistor to indicate the pulse status.

Second stage is counter stage, this IC counts each pulse input falling edge and increase the count value from Q0 to Q11, here we connected only 8 LEDs to represent 8 bit binary. Each LED ON represents binary 1 and OFF represents binary 0. If you want to reset the count then apply +5V to the MR (Reset) pin. During the counting operation MR (Reset) pin should be pulled down to ground (GND).

Pin configuration

Any ripple counter IC can be used to form binary counter and follow the data sheet instruction to make Up/Down counting and make sure about clock triggering position. Use 6V battery or Regulated DC power supply as power source. In this circuit pin 1, 15, 14, 12 of IC2 has no connections.

    1. C1 = 10 to 47 uF (for different Speed rate use different value Capacitor), C2 = 0.01uF.
yeah it is late reply but every Questions to be Answered 🙂
