Mosquito repellent circuit

Last Updated on April 14, 2024

Simple mosquito repellent circuit given here, it uses timer IC555 and piezo buzzer element. This circuit will produce KHz range pulse and that is reproduced as sound by buzzer. We human cannot hear that sound but this will irritates mosquito, keeps mosquito away.

After 8 years and 3 months since 2015, an important update, Mosquito repellent circuit won’t work!!!

I tell you Why? – Mosquitoes (Male and Female) don’t have ears like us (humans) and they have Antenna which is used by them as a primary sensory organs. These antenna have specialized structures named as “Johnston’s organs”. Which can detect sound Vibration in the air. Mosquitoes are capable of detecting sound frequencies within the range of 200 Hz to 2000 Hz (Hertz) and may have some sensitivity to frequencies in the range of 300 Hz to 500 Hz, and these frequency won’t vibrates whole air molecules inside the room. Even the mosquito hears it through Antenna, it can easily adapt to it.!

That is why I’m telling you, Mosquito repellent circuit won’t drive them away.

So What is the purpose of this Circuit? Its just a Buzzer sound Maker. I’m also knowing this after a decade!

Working details

The IC555 is connected with components to produce astable pulses, these pulse are reproduced as sound by buzzer, It can be varied by R3 resistance. Use Astable Multivibrator Calculator to calculate exact output pulse frequency.
